Believe it or not, St Patrick’s Day isn’t JUST a wild, green, binge drinking party.
Also known as the Feast of St Patrick, March 17th is celebrated worldwide as the traditional death date of the foremost patron saint of Ireland. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for almost 1000 years.
As time went on, the holiday evolved into a massive celebration of Irish culture- equipped with parades, music, dancing, traditional food and of course... drinking the pubs dry. Jolly good fun!
But how do you navigate a booze-filled day like this when you’re not drinking? Here are a few helpful tips on how to join in the fun with friends and family, without having to avoid the celebratory holiday altogether.
1) Bring a sober friend. Having support and someone to lean on will make the day that much more fun. Comfortability is key.
2) Be prepared to say no. It’s not uncommon for people (especially under the influence) to forget their manners. If someone pries about why you’re not drinking, having a quick response in your back pocket will help you easily escape the conversation.
3) Test out a non-alcoholic beverage option. Simply having something in your hand can help ease social anxieties. There are more and more zero proof drinks becoming available for you to choose from, whether it be a non-alcoholic craft beer like Libra or an alcohol free cocktail. Check out the options and find one that suits your fancy.
4) Create a new tradition. St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have to be about getting hammered. Recruit some pals to do an organized outdoor activity, whip up some delicious Irish inspired food. Whatever it is, finding your own way to celebrate will be so rewarding.
5) Go easy on yourself. No matter what is motivating you to take a break, if you do slip, forgive yourself. Praise your efforts and celebrate your victories.
